Finally, after 28 years of waiting, the teaser for Border 2 has arrived, and honestly, it’s hard to ignore. When films like Dhurandhar can set the box office on fire, then the impact of a film about our real war heroes should be even greater. The Border 2 teaser comes with this thought in mind, along with a bit of nostalgia, a little hype, and a few genuine concerns.
The teaser is straightforward. Sunny Deol’s presence alone brings back memories of the old Border. Although his face wasn’t shown much, his voice alone is enough to evoke memories of the original film.
“Awaaz kahan tak jaani chahiye…Lahore tk ” Only Sunny Paaji can say this. There are only a few actors who can deliver dialogue like Sunny Paaji. It’s clear that Border 2 is a critic-proof film. Just as with Gadar 2, questions about filmmaking can be raised, but the public’s response will only be seen in theatres.
The 125–124 seconds teaser does not reveal much about story. It mainly focuses on character introductions and their roles like, Diljit Dosanjh: Air Force pilot, with visuals of the sky and electricity. Ahaan Shetty: Navy background, with shots of the sea and waves. Varun Dhawan & Sunny Deol: Army, ground combat and hand-to-hand warfare. Clearly, the 1971 India–Pakistan film is set on three fronts – land, air and sea – and promises to be quite large in scale.
In the teaser, there is a slight divide, giving a 50-50 feeling. On one hand, there is Sunny Deol’s roar, which gives you goosebumps, and on the other hand, there are overused VFX that suppress the pure war emotion.
1997’s Border was memorable because of minimal VFX and maximum practical effects. Border 2’s teaser seems a bit too colourful, plastic and artificial. Some shots are reminiscent of Bhuj: The Pride of India, which was heavily trolled for its visuals.
Sunny Deol and the other actors in the teaser don’t fully project the confidence of soldiers. The entry is there, but the impact seems a little weak. For such a big brand film, it was very important for the backgrounds and locations to be realistic, which seems a little weak in the teaser. The film is being directed by Anurag Singh, who gave us Kesari, an underrated but powerful war drama. That’s why there’s hope that the trailer and final film will be better than the teaser.
